"Gerald was a consultant on a project to implement an enterprise planning tool in my Federal agency. He was superb at helping us develop procedures that incorporated best practices for this project. I would definitely recommend Gerald as someone who can provide the bridge between tech-speak and English!"
“How the principles I discovered and will share in this program helped me to extend a 3-month contract to more than 6 years and counting," and they can do the same for you.
When I started my consulting practice, I partnered with a Portfolio Management consulting firm that won a contract with the State Department of Transportation and needed a senior Portfolio Consultant to lead the effort with a small team of developers.
The firm signed the contract with the State Department of Transportation but then had to wait 8 weeks before they could start and conduct the first meeting, where we quickly learned that we were already behind.
During this meeting, we were tasked to create a solution for a homegrown system that needed to integrate with Microsoft Project Server for Enterprise scheduling and portfolio management for a portfolio of over 14,000 projects. We had to develop code to allow the two systems to work seamlessly.
The problem was we only had 15 days to prove that the concept would work…
During this first meeting, the CIO and I negotiated the terms of a proof of concept that could demo that the code works. This was key because of a commitment to the state's commissioner of transportation that the system would be in place and working and without this milestone being met the project would be scrapped.
We also only had to demo that one project could be created and integrated between the two systems for the proof of concept to be successful. While this was a bit of a relief, we still only had 15 days before we had to demonstrate it to the CIO who would report our results to the state commissioner. Mind you, we had never worked together as a team nor was any systems installed or setup.
Every morning our team met, we worked hard as a team to make the miracle happen.
And we did it - in 14 days.
With a day to spare. The demo was successful, but more importantly, we had created a team, with a vision and story that we could use in the future. Everyone had bought into our ability to accomplish anything as a team.
We realized that we could face any challenge and overcome any resistance with the secrets of working together that we discovered. It was these secrets that I wrote about in my first book, “Culture Is The Bass: 7 Steps for Creating High Performing Teams.”
We would remind each other how we had tackled the State Department of Transportation proof of concept 15-day deliverable in 14 days. The story made our team culture more collaborative, more like family and more results oriented. That initial 3-month contract has been extended for 6 additional years and counting.
In this program, I will share with you the strategies, tips, techniques, steps and processes that I discovered and wrote about in my book. You see, the agency had tried to make these changes before with other consultants, although they were smart and technically competent, they did not have the strategies and secrets that we discovered.
With these strategies and steps in your hands, you too can overcome any challenge and create a culture of execution, while becoming an in-demand change agent that your clients and customers need and admire.
We reduced our time of project development by 40%.
“Gerald provided exceptional leadership, vision, and a remarkably patient and steady hand during this multi-year, multi-iteration project. We were searching for a way to more efficiently manage and track schedules of our 14,000 active construction projects so we could more accurately predict advertisement dates, which would ultimately allow us to more accurately program, our $16 billion Six-Year Improvement Plan. Gerald has been an invaluable asset during this transition since day one.
Rob Tieman, P.E., Director, Project Management Office (PMO) Virginia Department of Transportation

Module 1: Create a shared vision – who are we becoming? Co-creating forward-looking leadership!
A great culture starts with a great vision. As Dr. Willie Jolley says, “Without a vision, people perish, but with a vision, people flourish.” Here we will focus on creating, developing, and sharing your Big Picture vision for the organization.
In this module, we cover:
- Identifying Your Vision
- Staying True to Your Vision
- What is a Shared Vision?
- The Leadership Connection
- How do you create a shared vision and cascade it throughout the organization?
By the end of the module, you will:
- Create or refine your organization’s mission statement.
- Develop a best practice strategy for sharing your vision with your organization.
- Create a plan to cascade your vision statement throughout so that everyone is on the same page and understands the big-picture vision.
Module 2: Implement values that guide behavior
In this module, we will discuss how your organization’s values should be the guiding principles of how everyone behaves. A company’s values are the core of its culture. While a vision articulates a company’s purpose, values offer a set of guidelines on the behaviors and mindsets needed to achieve that vision.
In this module, we cover:
- What are values and how should they drive behavior?
- Four types of values that are important to identify
- Why values are the core of an organization's culture
- Examples of organizational values from brands we love
- How to stay true to your organization’s values
By the end of the module, you will:
- Understand how to use your core values to make decisions faster and evaluate team members. Everyone on board is a culture fit for your organization.
- Develop or refine your core organizational values.
- Create a prioritized list of your organization values.
Module 3: Buy-In as a team sport – our ability to embrace the vision and values.
Once you have your vision and values, the next most important thing is to get everyone on the team to buy-in to your vision and values. No company can build a coherent culture without people who either share its core values or possess the willingness and ability to embrace those values. That’s why the greatest firms in the world focus on hiring only people who buy into the vision and are willing to live by their values.
In this module, we cover:
- Buy-In is a team Sport
- Buy-In starts with the right people
- Why is buy-in essential?
- How to create Buy-In that Sticks
- How to partner with your team to create a culture of change.
- How to create culture alignment across the organization and the impact of not being aligned.
By the end of the module, you will:
- Understand my co-creating and collaborating on the key methods for getting members to buy into any project or activity.
- Learn an exercise that you can use the beginning of each new initiative that will create buy-in with your team.
Module 4: Storytelling that engages the head, heart and hands
Leaders and managers are often faced with the imploding question: “Why do some employees engage in their work on a day-to-day basis while others struggle to show up on time?” It’s all about the stories. All organizations have a unique history - a unique story. The ability to unearth that history and craft it into a narrative is a core element of creating an engaging organizational culture.
In this module, we cover:
- Stories are the gas that powers your organization.
- Why storytelling influences your head, heart, and hands.
- The brain science of conversation and storytelling; how they build relationships and culture.
- What's your story? I’ll be sharing mine.
- How to leverage stories to impact your culture change challenge.
By the end of the module, you will:
- Understand the neuroscience behind why our brains are wired for stories and why stories engage the head, heart, and hands.
- Possess a storytelling framework that will enable you to create stories that engage your audience every time.
Module 5: Best Practices baked into the DNA of the organization
One of the key questions I hear is, “How do you manage change in a rapidly changing world?” You implement best practices that everyone knows how to follow when the pressure's on. Values are of little importance unless they are enshrined in a company’s practices.
In this module, we cover:
- What are best practices?
- How companies leverage best practices
- How do you implement best practices?
- The 8-steps to developing best practices?
By the end of the module, you will:
- Understand how to implement best practices in a way that everyone on your team can buy-in them and are willing to adopt them.
- An 8-step process for creating and implementing best practices in your environment.
Module 6: Your environments shape your execution culture
Consider Pixar. They have a huge open atrium in the office – they have developed an environment where the members are able to connect throughout the day and interact in informal and unplanned ways. During this module, we will explore how your workplace environments shape your culture of execution.
In this module, we cover:
- How does your environment shape your organization's culture?
- How to create an environment that supports your organization's vision and purpose
- What is a toxic environment?
- Create an environment where excellence is expected
- How to build a positive environment
By the end of the module, you will:
- Understand how your physical and virtual environments shape your organization’s culture.
- Have a list of exemplary organizations that have used their physical and virtual environments to create a culture of execution.
Module 7: Excellence in Execution – accomplishing results that matter
At the end of the day, it is all about getting the right things done, at the right time and by the right people. People Respect What You Inspect. Your team members make a commitment to the team, and not just to the leader. If done correctly, they should hold each other accountable.
In this module, we cover:
- What if your practice is the performance? The art of execution.
- Execution excellence is a process and a discipline that can be learned. Do you know the steps?
- Examples of organizational execution
- Four key tools all teams need to execute their goals effectively
- Building bridges to get from strategy to execution excellence
- 10 steps to strategic execution
- How to measure your organization's culture change impact
By the end of the module, you will:
- Plan to execute your highest priority activities with a cadence of built-in accountability.
- Develop an authority and decision-making process that streamlines your organization’s activities where everyone knows who is responsible, accountable, consulted, and informed at all times.
- A framework for creating detail plans for how to manage and measure culture change.

Nicely orchestrated and well-executed business advice.
"In presenting a complex business topic, some analogies can be exceedingly effective while others can wear thin. Leonard’s debut compares the culture of an organization to the bass in an orchestra. More broadly, he views an orchestra and its musicians akin to a business organization and its employees. Because of the author’s in-depth knowledge of both music and project management, the analogy is sustainable: 'If an orchestra cannot play a versatile range of music, after a while, their performance will become predictable and stale….There has to be a framework in place that allows new pieces to be practiced and performed. Companies must design a framework for standardizing project management techniques within their strategic portfolio management environment.'"

“I love this – Having an on purpose culture is vital to the success of any group – and I believe Gerald J. Leonard has it down.”
Brynne Tillman Chief Learning Officer at PeopleLinx
The gap between workforce engagement and workplace productivity is widening. In a study conducted by Kronos and Future Workplace, “The biggest threat to building an engaged and transformational workforce is employee burnout. The newest study in the Employee Engagement Series conducted by Kronos Incorporated and Future Workplace® found 95% of human resource leaders admit employee burnout is sabotaging their workforce, yet there is no obvious solution on the horizon.”
Here’s what I’ve experienced as a consultant and coach: When your team is emotionally connected and supportive, burnout is reduced and engagement goes up.
I developed this program, “Creating a Culture of Execution,” to address this problem. For me personally, it’s more than helping an organization achieve bottom-line results. It’s about giving people back their lives and allowing them to have time with their family and for things outside of work. I know that these principles, and processes, and practices - when put in place in your life - will not only develop a culture of execution in your organization, they will help you achieve what we all seek: a true work-life balance.
You can improve your teamwork, raise morale, increase productivity, efficiency, and enhance the retention of your workforce while getting real bottom-line results…
